Emma Kukuk (they/them) is a freelance writer, editor and artist based in Michigan/Colonized Mishigamaw. They write about the intersections of identity, disability, and nature.

Living with a mobility disorder can make hiking, backpacking, and camping difficult sometimes, but the right gear and a solid preparedness plan can turn any situation into a breeze.

After relearning how to walk (thankfully not from scratch), they’ve found a newfound love in moving their body - especially their joints - while connecting with nature. Spending more time outdoors can bolster your sense of self-reliance, reconnect with your inner feral child, and teach you practical skills in an empowering way.

Em’s favorite hikes include the Porcupine Mountains, Pictured Rocks, the Eben Ice Caves, Bare Bluff, and Isle Royale. When they’re not enjoying the sunshine and the simple joy of walking without pain, you can find them in their garden, in their art studio, drafting nature-inspired crochet patterns, or teaching themselves a new esoteric craft.
